About Me
Roberto Catalano, Ph.D. was born in Catania, Sicily, where he began his music career as a self-taught guitarist in 1973. He holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA and his academic interests include the oral tradition of Southern Italy and the music of the Arabic speaking Near East. He is also interested in American popular music and organology. In1994 he conducted fieldwork in Sardinia where he researched a folk reed clarinet about which he has written the only monograph on the subject to date. Over the years, Roberto Catalano has performed and collaborated with several different bands, including Anonimix, developing adaptability and flexibility to a wide range of musical circumstances. He is a multi-instrumentalist, a collector and maker of world musical instruments. He has written scores in various genres, the most notable being a Sardinian traditional polyphonic vocal piece arranged for the four strings of Grammy Award winner, Kronos Quartet. Currently. He is the co-leader of Musicàntica, a dynamic duo dedicated to the transmission and translation of traditional music of southern Italy in the United States.
