There are in our lives fleeting moments which hold their place in memory only as the recollection of a feeling. There is no remembrance of gesture, of action, of any outward manifestation of life; these are lost in the unearthly brilliance or in the unearthly gloom of such moments. Out here on the island, I am aware that everyone I have known still exists, still moves and breathes. But now I can only see them in long perspective, far off, diminished, seemingly lost forever. I stand for hours on the shores, the sea breeze sweeping over this lonely reach. I hear no voices in the hot, languid stillness, but the sound of the rushing sea that hurries in. I look at the sparkling solitude of the flowing water, of the water flowing ceaselessly and free in a soft, cool murmur of ripples at my feet. The world seems to end here.....
